Born from a love of literature and a belief that the right book at the right time can change everything.
Tata Book Club began in 2019 when three friends realised they were all reading the same books but having completely different experiences. Over wine and late-night conversations, they discovered something powerful: books don't just tell stories, they create conversations that reveal who we are.
What started as monthly gatherings in a Newcastle kitchen has grown into a community of over 24,000 readers across the United Kingdom. We've sent out hundreds of thousands of books, hosted countless discussions, and watched friendships form between people who might never have met otherwise.
But our mission hasn't changed: to connect people through books that challenge, inspire, and transform the way we see the world.
The principles that guide every book we choose and every conversation we start
We read hundreds of books to find the ones worth your time. Every selection is intentional, meaningful, and chosen with care. No algorithms, no sponsored placements, just books that genuinely matter.
Reading is personal, but it doesn't have to be solitary. We create spaces where diverse perspectives meet, where disagreement is welcome, and where every voice has value.
Literature should reflect the world's complexity. We actively seek out authors and stories from varied backgrounds, genres, and perspectives that expand our understanding.
We partner with publishers who share our commitment to environmental responsibility. Our packaging is recyclable, and we offset the carbon footprint of every delivery.
Every book purchase directly supports authors and independent publishers. We believe in paying creators fairly and creating opportunities for emerging voices.
Reading is a journey without destination. We encourage curiosity, embrace questions, and celebrate the uncomfortable conversations that lead to growth.
Three friends start meeting monthly to discuss books. What begins as casual conversations quickly reveals a hunger for deeper literary engagement in their community.
When the world locks down, we move online. Virtual book clubs explode in popularity, connecting isolated readers and proving that community transcends physical space.
We launch our monthly book subscription service. Within six months, we have 5,000 members and partnerships with over 40 independent publishers.
Local chapters form organically in 50 cities across the UK. We host our first national book festival, bringing together 2,000 readers and 75 authors.
We establish our author support programme, providing grants and promotion for emerging writers. Ten debut authors we championed go on to win major literary awards.
Named "Best Book Club in the UK" by The Guardian. Our community surpasses 20,000 members, and we celebrate by donating 10,000 books to schools and libraries.
We're just getting started. New initiatives include a publishing imprint for underrepresented voices, reading programmes in prisons, and international expansion.
